The Quint | Patriarchy At Its Peak: No Voter ID for Single Girls in Bhadohi
India has been hailed as the largest democracy in the world and we all take pride in the fact that we have had universal adult franchise since day 1 of us being a Republic. However, in a small village called Galhaiya in the Bhadohi district of Uttar Pradesh, patriarchy has stripped the voting rights of unmarried girls.
In this village, no voter ID card is made for single girls. The reason that they have cited is that the girls will get married and go to their 'real home' and only then they can have an address to put on the voter ID card.
