Self-styled godman and Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan has been convicted of raping two women by the CBI court in Panchkula. Haryana and Punjab police are on high alert and security personnel have been deployed at sensitive spots. The army has been called in to monitor the situation in and around Panchkula, where thousands of Dera followers have assembled ahead of the verdict.
He may have played hallowed roles in the many movies he claims to have scripted, directed as well as produced from scratch, but Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is now going to play Kaidi No. 1997 in Rohtak’s Sunaria jail.
The self-styled godman, who also faces murder charges, has been sentenced to 10 years in jail, in connection with a rape case dating back to 2002.
Jagdeep Singh, the judge who sentenced the Dera chief, was flown into the heavily guarded Rohtak prison from Panchkula. To ensure law and order in and around Rohtak district, the Haryana police claimed to have put in place a multi-layered security cover and even issued shoot-at-sight orders on anyone meaning to trespass the jail’s premises.
Ram Rahim was convicted by a Special CBI court on 25 August in Haryana, which held him guilty of raping two women followers. His followers then descended on the streets of Panchkula, clashing with security personnel and setting media vans on fire. At least 38 people died in the ensuing violence.
