‘Very Proud’: Khel Ratna & Arjuna Award Winners React to Honours - The Quint

The Quint caught up with a few of the athletes ahead of the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Dronacharya Awards and Arjuna Awards ceremony in New Delhi on Tuesday.
The Paralympic gold medallist (javelin throw) Devendra Jhajharia said that it is an historic moment because he is the first para athlete to be honoured with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award.
Cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur said she never thought she will receive the Arjuna Award. Tennis player Saketh Myneni said that the Arjuna Award is a big boost for his career.
Former India football player Oinam Devi was relieved that her hard work was not wasted.

The Quint: ‘It’s Very Disappointing’: Sakshi Reacts to Javed Akhtar’s Comment

India’s star wrestler Sakshi Malik said that she was very disappointed with athletes being called illiterate. Screenwriter Javed Akhtar had called wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt and cricketer Virender Sehwag “hardly illiterate” after they mocked Gurmehar Kaur’s campaign against war on Twitter.
The Rio Olympics bronze medallist said that an athlete has to be intelligent because he or she has to make decisions in split seconds in any sport.
She added that, it’s very saddening to hear something like this since the athletes work very hard to win medals for the country.
