Twenty-one-year-old Sobhan Mukherjee has come up with a unique initiative in Kolkata –separate toilets for the transgender community.
The move has been widely hailed as it is perhaps for the first time in India that such toilets have been conceived for transgenders who are still considered pariahs.
Mukherjee managed to convince his local municipal councillor, Anita Kar Majumdar to set aside two washrooms, exclusively for the ‘others’ in the four pay-and-use toilets, in Bansdroni area in south Kolkata.

Bangladeshi Becomes Britain’s First Muslim Gay Groom - The Quint

A British man of Bangladeshi origin who had tried killing himself after being attacked over his sexuality tied the knot and became the first Muslim to wed in a same-sex marriage.
Jahed Choudhury, 24, had always been the ‘black sheep’ of his family. He felt boycotted by the Muslims because of his sexual orientation. He wasn’t allowed to enter the Mosque that he had been entering for 15 years and was sent on a religious pilgrimage to cure his homosexuality.

The Quint: Priya Patil, 1st Trangender Candidate to Contest for BMC Elections

Priya Patil is the first transgender to contest for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.
"Ek chai do khaari, Priya Patil sabse bhari” chanted several transgenders who campaigned in support of Patil.
"There is a pressing need to change the way the people perceive the transgenders. I wish to voice the need of my community to the government” says Patil.
Priya Patil has filed her nomination from ward number 166 in Kurla West and would be contesting again Shiv Sena’s Manali Tulaskar.
