Protesting against the crackdown on illegal and mechanised slaughter houses in Uttar Pradesh, meat sellers here have gone on an indefinite strike . The mutton and chicken sellers who have pulled down their shutters have threatened to intensify their stir from Monday, said Mubeen Qureshi of the Lucknow Bakra Gosht Vypar Mandal. As a result, non veg food outlet, including the famous Tunday and Rahim's, who had shifted to mutton and chicken dishes after buffalo meat became scarce, too kept their shops shut.
Death toll has risen to five after an ammonia gas explosion in a cold storage in Kanpur. Reports suggest all deceased in the blast belong to Bihar. At least two dozen people are still trapped in the building which collapsed after the explosion, police said. The building at Shivrajpur was crowded when the tragedy occurred as many farmers were there to stock the potato harvest. Officials said the building apparently came down after a gas leak in the chiller plant led to an explosion. Twelve persons, including five farmers and seven cold storage staff, have been rescued from the rubble. After the building came crashing down, officials said there had been leakage of ammonia gas and masks have been requisitioned from Kanpur city so that rescue operations can be taken up at the earliest.
Two school students were injured after unidentified individuals lobbed country-made bombs at a Kanpur school on Thursday. One of the girls, who suffered minor injuries, told ANI that she had gone to the Sardar Patel lnter-College to get her admit card, when the incident happened.
A biker is seen sitting on his motorcycle as it gets towed by the traffic police in Kanpur. The bike was illegally towed after the biker refused to get down from the bike at the Bada Chauraha area of Kanpur.
The elections are round the corner and people have been standing in queues to cast their votes. But in this Kanpur locality, at least 4,100 people do not have voter ID cards. Thus, they can’t vote in the upcoming elections. The locals claim that the political parties use this locality to adjust the ‘fake’ votes. They have complained to the local authorities and have also written to the PMO. But while some have been waiting for a couple of months, other have been waiting since years.
