He allegedly fooled prospective wives and got lucky thrice in marriage. But a man in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh ran into trouble in the fourth attempt as his three ex-wives, who he had divorced through ‘triple talaq’, have now accused him of raping a minor and also making their obscene videos. The three women approached police two days ago and alleged that 30-year-old Danish married for the first time in 2013 and made an illegal MMS of his wife. According to police, after a dispute with her, Danish began blackmailing his wife and her family by threatening to share the MMS on social media, unless they paid him dowry. He later pronounced ‘triple talaq’, an Islam-specific divorce practice, and married for the second time. The troubled second marriage lasted only a year and he divorced his wife.
Narendra Modi, on 29 April, urged the Muslim community to refrain from politicising the issue of triple talaq and hope that intellectuals from within the community would come forward to fight the practice. Speaking on the occasion of Basava Jayanti in New Delhi, Narendra Modi said there have been heated debates on triple talaq but he hoped the community would come together to rally against such traditions.
In the latest instance of Triple Talaq, a national-level Netball player was divorced by her husband for giving birth to a baby girl. Amroha resident Shumayala Javed married Azam Abbasi in April 2014, following which he in-laws allegedly harassed her over dowry.
A 30-year-old woman, Rehana, staged a dharna outside her in-laws’ house after her husband refused to let her in. Rehana’s husband allegedly pronounced triple talaq and kicked her out of the house. Refusing to accept this, Rehana staged a dharna and started banging the door of the house repeatedly. Rehana’s father was also present with her. He alleged that Rehana’s in-laws want to marry Rehan’s husband to some other woman. He also alleged that Rehana’s in-laws were demanding dowry. Rehana said that she wants justice for herself and her 4-year-old daughter and if she is denied the justice, then she will resort to any extreme measure including conversion to Hinduism.
