NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind defeated Opposition's Meira Kumar to officially become the 14th President of India. Kovind won the election by a margin of 3,34,730 votes, securing 7,02,044 as against Kumar's 3,67,314. The former Governor of Bihar will be sworn in on 25 July. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Kovind for his victory, saying that he was “gladdened by the extensive support for Kovind among MPs across various states."

to The Quint, union Minister Venkaiah Naidu said that it is imperative for a
democratic country to have an opposition. Ridiculing rival party Congress, he said that the people had
taken a decision to not recognise the party as an opposition in the Parliament.
He further added that the party had managed to pocket only seven seats in UP,
despite having snagged an alliance with the Samajwadi Party. Stating that the BJP’s well-wishes will remain should the
opposition put up a united front, Naidu affirmed that such a situation is close
to impossible. Highlighting the politics in states without a BJP-led front,
Naidu said that the opposition parties will never agree for an alliance with
each other. “If it happens, it will be easier”, he said.
