Nearly 40,000 Maharashtra doctors decided to go on an indefinite strike to support their colleagues agitating over the lack of security to them in the government hospitals. The 40,000-odd doctors, all members of the Maharashtra chapter of the Indian Medical Association, decided to shun work and join over 4,500 resident doctors in the state, who have been staying away from the duty for the last three days. In AIIMS Delhi, around 1,200 resident doctors turned up on duty expressing solidarity with their striking counterparts in Maharashtra. They have decided to continue this novel protest tomorrow as well. "Nobody bothers about resident doctors who were brutally beaten up. Instead of providing security to resident doctors at their workplace, the Maharashtra government is threatening them of deducting their salaries and throwing them out of their hostels," president of Resident doctors' Association of AIIMS Dr Vijay Gurjar said. "We, the resident doctors at AIIMS, will work with helmets on in the emergency department tomorrow as well," he said.
Tajamul Islam, the eight-year-old world kickboxing champion from Bandipora district hit out at the Jammu and Kashmir government for not providing proper training facilities and equipment for her and other sportspersons from her district. In a four-minute video Facebook Live, Islam, who won a gold medal at world kickboxing championship in Italy in 2016, said it is a matter of shame that the state government has not been able to build a proper indoor stadium in Bandipora for sportspersons which could have enabled them to train throughout the year. While showing the tin shed used as 'indoor hall', the youngster said there was no heating arrangement inside that would have made training possible during winters. Islam appealed to the Centre and state government to construct an indoor stadium in Bandipora and also provide the required equipment for her to continue her training. Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Vijay Goel responded to Islam’s video and promised to right a letter to the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on the matter. Suresh Mandal, a Muzaffarpur resident had to carry his wife's body wrapped in a piece of cloth on his shoulders on Wednesday after the government hospital (where the patient had died during treatment) refused to provide him an ambulance or mortuary van.
