In an effort to protest against the alleged killings of BJP-RSS party workers in Kerala, BJP President Amit Shah launched the Jan Raksha Movement in Kerala on Tuesday. Blaming the communist state government for the killings, Shah claimed that more than 120 BJP workers have been murdered in the state, which includes 85 people who were murdered in the hometown of Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Kannur. For the same reason, Kannur was chosen as the starting point of the movement which will be carried out as padyatras across the nation. Leaders Debate the Consequence of SC’s Triple Talaq Verdict

The Supreme Court on 22 August struck down the validity of Triple Talaq with a 3:2 majority. A bench comprising five judges, headed by Chief Justice JS Khehar, had reserved its verdict on 18 May, six days after the hearing began on 11 May.
Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi hailed the SC verdict as being “good for women”.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the SC’s decision on Triple Talaq and called it a move that grants equality to Muslim women.
Asaduddin Owaisi, President of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), though said he respected the decision, he also added that its implementation would face challenges.

Congress candidate Ahmed Patel on Wednesday beat the BJP nominee in a bitterly fought Rajya Sabha election in Gujarat after late night dramatic developments witnessed the Election Commission reject the votes of two dissident Congress MLAs for violating electoral rules.
Patel, political secretary to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, beat Balwantsinh Rajput with 44 votes.
BJP chief Amit Shah made his maiden entry into the house of elders, as did party nominee and Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani, clinching 46 votes each.
“It was a tough election, everyone worked together and our party emerged stronger out of it,” said Ahmed Patel after winning his Rajya Sabha seat on Wednesday.
He further said: “Under Rahul Gandhi's leadership Congress will be strengthened and we will win elections.”

Meet Ram Nath Kovind, The 14th President of India - The Quint

NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind defeated Opposition's Meira Kumar to officially become the 14th President of India.
Kovind won the election by a margin of 3,34,730 votes, securing 7,02,044 as against Kumar's 3,67,314.
The former Governor of Bihar will be sworn in on 25 July.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Kovind for his victory, saying that he was “gladdened by the extensive support for Kovind among MPs across various states."

Ram Nath Kovind: Everything About NDA's Presidential Candidate - The Quint

Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind is the NDA's presidential nominee, BJP chief Amit Shah announced on 19 June. The announcement was made post the BJP parliamentary committee meet. However, the NDA allies must endorse BJP’s nomination of Ram Nath Kovind.
Kovind, a lawyer by profession, began his career in 1971 and was enrolled in the Bar Council of India. He worked in the capacity of an advocate for the central government in Delhi High Court from 1977 to 1979. Throughout his 16-year-long legal career, he has practised in both the Delhi HC and the Supreme Court.
