Congress candidate Ahmed Patel on Wednesday beat the BJP nominee in a bitterly fought Rajya Sabha election in Gujarat after late night dramatic developments witnessed the Election Commission reject the votes of two dissident Congress MLAs for violating electoral rules.
Patel, political secretary to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, beat Balwantsinh Rajput with 44 votes.
BJP chief Amit Shah made his maiden entry into the house of elders, as did party nominee and Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani, clinching 46 votes each.
“It was a tough election, everyone worked together and our party emerged stronger out of it,” said Ahmed Patel after winning his Rajya Sabha seat on Wednesday.
He further said: “Under Rahul Gandhi's leadership Congress will be strengthened and we will win elections.”
