The award honours his 12-year-log battle to keep Vedanta-led bauxite mining company to open a mine at Nyamgiri hills in Odisha. Thereby ensuring the 80,000 Dongria Kondh tribes, who consider the hills their God, continue to live in peace with nature. Prafulla is the sixth Indian to receive the Goldman prize.
The Goldman Environmental Prize honours each year, 6 grassroots activists for sustained and significant efforts to protect and enhance the natural environment.
