The Quint: The Politics of the Dead and the Living in Manipur


For more than 550 days now, 8 dead bodies in Churachandpur have been waiting for a burial. For the local Paetie tribals here these are the martyrs who fought for their identity and rights. They were killed in police firing and the violence that erupted in Churachandpur on 31 August, 2015. The protests were against the three bills passed by the Congress led state Govt, the bills threatened the identity of the tribals living in the hill districts of Manipur. 
Their relatives have refused to bury the bodies till their demand for 
Self-governance and a separate state is fulfilled.
